Finland: Design

Design is a big part of Finland, with Helsinki being named World Design Capital in 2012. This section looks at different designers, agencies, museums and events.

Sanna Annukka

Sanna Annukka is a half finnish half British designer, and spent a lot of her childhood in Finland. There,  she spent a lot of time outdoors camping, fishing and picking berries. Her work is inspired by this, and I think it can be clearly seen. She also creates textile work for the Finnish brand Marimekko.

This is a silk screen print, and I love the simple shapes that make up the illustration.

This is one of the pieces for Marimekko, a well known brand in Finland.

Another one of her illustrations, 'Call of the Cuckoo'. Limited colours and shapes is something I like to use in my own work, so I really like Annukka's illustrations.

This illustration is about the destinations you can get from flying through Helsinki, the capital of Finland.

This was for a book called The Fir Tree. I love how bright the illustrations are, and I think you can really see how Finland has inspired her work by including lots of nature.

These are some editorial pieces she has done, an area of graphic design that I am very interested in.

She gained a lot of recognition for designing artwork for Keane. I think it is a great project, and the illustrations work really well with the album, and relate to the song titles.

This is a branding agency based in Helsinki.

This is a project for 'The Lovely Cafe', a new restaurant that opened in an artisan area of Helsinki.

'Helsinki Food Company provides design and production services to food industry and other industries close by. Basically, they do everything that involves food consulting or food styling: from developing recipies to producing TV-shows and media productions. '

Kuudes Kerros
These are a design team in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, and focus on Branding and Packaging. As I am interested in these two areas of graphic design I was interested in looking at their work.

Here is some packaging for freshly baked bread they created:

Heres what they had to say about the project:

'Packaging range for freshly baked bread

We designed a range of bags for Fazer breads that are baked in supermarkets. The bread needed to stand out as a fresh product, so we went for a casual, lightly packaged and branded look. Strong shelf presence and unity of the different products was our priority, but we also made it easy to identify different products inside the range.'

I wanted to look at some work they have done for Finland to see more of what the country is like.

Helsinki Festival

They did some work for the Helsinki Festival, which they describe on the website as 'one of Finland's largest multi-arts festival that takes place every year in August-September. The festival program is a classical and world music as well as theater, dance, children's shows, city events, visual arts and film.'

Helsinki City Library

They have also created this concept for the new libraries which are to be created in Helsinki, and they look very modern and clean. When I research why Helsinki was voted the Design Capital of the world I'll see if this is a characteristic of Finnish architecture.

Helsinki Living Lab

They also did work for Helsinki Living Lab which is:

I noticed the printed text was also in English, which suggests there's English speaking people living in Helsinki as it is aimed at people in the 'Helsinki metropolitan area'.

They've done some more work for an interior space, and it is similar to the library in that it is clean, modern and uses simple colours. I think its' very effective using the mustard and the red signage to notify customers there's information there, as they stand out against the black and white.

These are a couple advertisements they've made for the bookstore, and again they are simple and have used limited colours to make an impact.

Sissy

Sissy are a branding and design agency based in Helsinki.

Kruunu Herkku
This is a branding and identity project they have done, and is similar to the architecture by the last design agency I discussed as it is a simple, bright and clean design.

World Design Capital

Helsinki was announced the World Design Capital in 2012, and here is what is said about it on the website:

Here are some pictures featured:

Here is a video about it. This video shows a good representation of what Helsinki is like and what it looks like.

Helsinki Design Week
There is a week dedicated to design in the capital, which begins on the 12th September till the 22nd. There are many different events over the course of the week, and I'm going to look at a few to see what it's all about.

One of the events is to get children to design a kitchen for Aalto+Aalto, Pentagram Design and Beacon Helsinki. I think this kind of exhibition shows how much children are a part of Finland, as there are lots of things targeted at them like Lapland and the Moomins.

FAT is a Finnish magazine which is published once a year, and  will be published during Helsinki Design Week.

There are also lots of different workshops, and this particular one is by a jewellery maker showing you how to make jewellery out of silver spoons.

Design Museum
The Helsinki Design Museum was founded in 1873, and has lots of exhibitions, collections and guided tours. Artefacts include glass, textiles, interior design, furniture, lights and industrial design.

This is one of the exhibitions.

Marimekko
Based in Helsinki, Marimekko makes home furnishings and womens clothing. Signature characteristics are bright colours and bold patterns.

Katie Treggiden is an award winning blogger, and she wrote an article on the Helsinki Design District. This is her take on Helsinki:

Helsinki Design District photo montage

I’ve only been in Helsinki for 24 hours at the time of writing and I already love it. This collection of photos is from my first two hours alone! Lots more detailed posts to follow – I promise! From top to bottom and left to right…
  • A trip to Finland just wouldn’t be complete without Marimekko - I loved this yellow and black range.
  • I have no idea what this building is, but I thought it looked kind of cool – near the Cable Factory – any ideas?!
  • I have already spotted lots of photos of numbers!
  • I love the bright orange seats on the world’s simplest Metro system (just one line!) – so on trend!
  • The smell of fresh berries at Market Square on the harbour is amazing.
  • More gorgeous orange from Artek – an Alvar Aalto classic.
  • The Central Railway Station was designed by Eliel Saarinen (Eero Saarinen’s dad!).
  • Some gorgeous glassware from Iittala. I love the colours.
  • …and more from Marimekko.
  • The incredible double-height apartment I’m staying in – it’s quite special.
  • Daisies – just because I liked them, and because they were Alvar Aalto’s favourite flower!
  • More Alvar Aalto at Artek – I love this simple print, especially in yellow.
  • …and one last snap of the Central Railway Station.
Stay tuned for lots more from Helsinki…
